Pinheiral hosts the 5th Vale do Café Jongo Meeting Reproduction The 5th Vale do Café Jongo Meeting will take place on July 25th in Pinheiral (RJ). The event will take place at Parque das Ruínas de Pinheiral. The program also celebrates Mestra Fatinha's 70th birthday and Jongo State Day. The meeting will bring together around 450 quilombola leaders from 18 quilombos and traditional jongo communities in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with the aim of strengthening the memory and traditions of Afro-Brazilian culture. In this edition, the meeting will be held at the former headquarters of a farm that brought together more than three thousand people enslaved in the cultivation of coffee, the Parque das Ruínas de Pinheiral. Currently the site is managed by Jongo de Pinheiral. Along the way, Mestra Fatinha created the Jongo Museum, took the cultural event to schools and universities and leads a movement of jongueira communities in the region Southeast. For his work, he recently received the title of Notorious Knowledge from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). According to the organization, in addition to strengthening Afro-Brazilian culture, the meeting also boosts the region's economy, attracting visitors and increasing occupancy in the hotel chain in Pinheiral and neighboring municipalities. Jongo Jongo is a round dance of Angolan origin, brought to Brazil by the Bantu people during the period of slavery. The tradition developed in the slave quarters and coffee farms of Vale do Café, a region that covers municipalities in the interior of the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. After the abolition of slavery, the cultural manifestation reached the hills of Rio de Janeiro with black families who, later, contributed to the formation of the first samba schools. While this tradition spread throughout the capital, other families remained in Vale do Café and formed quilombos, where jongo continues to be preserved in its original essence and tradition. The Vale do Café Games Meeting is led by the region's centuries-old communities who together created the Vale do Café Afro Circuit to promote local ethnic tourism and generate sustainability for its residents.
