The decision was taken after United States President Donald Trump announced an additional 50% tariff on most Canadian products exported to the North American market. The ceremony would bring together authorities from both countries.
In a statement, the Canadian government stated that, given the trade measures announced by the USA, it would be "inappropriate" to hold a joint celebration. Canada will hold its own event on the same date, according to information from the Associated Press.
So far, there is no confirmation of a separate ceremony on the North American side. The opening of the bridge to traffic, however, is still scheduled for July 27th.
This is not the first impasse involving the new connection between the two countries. In February, Trump threatened to postpone the opening of the bridge and called for the United States to receive at least a 50% stake in the project, in addition to being "fully compensated" for the investment made by Canada.
Trump announced this Tuesday (21) an additional 50% tariff on most Canadian products imported into the United States. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney classified the measure as another episode in a series of "unilateral trade actions" adopted by Washington.
According to the announcement, the new rates come into effect on August 19th. Among the products affected are wines, hockey sticks, cement, dairy products, swimming pools, furniture, fishing rods, seeds, clothes and wigs. The tariffs also apply to goods covered by the United States, Mexico and Canada free trade agreement (USMCA), although imports from the energy sector and goods already subject to sectoral tariffs remain exempt.
