Man is arrested after trying to break into a jewelry store through the ceiling of a shopping mall in SP

The suspect tried to enter the jewelry store through the store's ceiling. According to the police report, the crime took place around 2:30 am at Ribeirão Shopping, in the south of Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo.

He stated that he intended to enter the jewelry store to steal it. In a statement to the police, he said that he came from Brasília to work as a bricklayer's assistant, but ended up not finding work.

Mall security guards were already watching the suspect. The security team stated that around 9pm on Monday (20), he was photographing the establishment's jewelry stores, and when the security systems were activated, they saw that it was the same man.

After the place was surrounded, he surrendered to the police while he was still inside the cellar. Ribeirão Shopping security guards broke the plaster and removed the suspect from the scene.

The man did not steal any items from the store. It was found that he opened a fire hydrant box located in front of the HotZone store, where he entered the establishment. Soon after, he took a ladder in the back to reach the ceiling that led to the jewelry store.

Tools and electronics such as a rope, pliers, hammer, tablet and a portable charger were found. The objects were seized and taken to the Ribeirão Preto Criminalistics Institute.

The suspect had already been detained by the establishment's security guards before the police arrived. In a statement, Ribeirão Shopping reported that the mall's security team identified an attempted invasion of one of the stores, which was quickly contained, and the man ended up being taken away by the Military Police.

The case was registered at the Ribeirão Preto Judicial Police Center. The suspect must also undergo a custody hearing.
