President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said that the country is prepared to deal with the effects of a serious El Niño in the second half of this year. "We have never been so prepared to deal with a possible adversity presented by nature", declared Lula this Wednesday, 29, at a ministerial meeting held at Palácio do Planalto to talk about the climate phenomenon.

"If it happens seriously, we are prepared. If it doesn't happen, it was worth the intention of preparing to face something serious. What's hard is when something happens that no one is prepared for," said Lula.

At the meeting, the Minister of the Civil House, Miriam Belchior, announced the budget reinforcement of R$ 1.335 billion to mitigate the consequences of the climate phenomenon, such as excessive rainfall in the South, drought and fires in the North and Northeast and delays in rainfall in the Central-West.

Of this total, R$998 million will be invested in the areas of food supply, food security, health and hydrological monitoring. Another R$337 million corresponds to the extraordinary credit opened by Provisional Measure No. 1,367/2026 for fire prevention and combat actions.

According to estimates from meteorological agencies around the world, there is a tendency for a "very strong" El Niño for the second half of this year. The classification is used when the temperature of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean increases by more than 2ºC, causing various effects on the global climate.
