Crime against wildlife leads environmental infractions in Baixada Santista; check the data

Reproduction/City Hall of Santos The Military Environmental Police recorded 1,173 infractions in the partial balance of 2026 in Baixada Santista, with emphasis on unauthorized wildlife crime. The infraction totals 666 occurrences, which represents almost 56.8% of the total. After half of the year, the number of incidents recorded is proportionally lower than that recorded in 2024 and 2025, which indicates the maintenance of a general downward trend. The maintenance of wild fauna without authorization continues to be the main environmental crime fought by police officers. Following the partial survey in 2026, fishing in a prohibited place or period (166 cases) and fishing with gear or irregular quantity (134) appear. ?Wildlife without authorization: Refers to the capture, maintenance, transport, commercialization or any other use of wild animals without authorization from the competent environmental bodies. Environmental infractions in Baixada Santista The data for 2024 and 2025 represent the consolidated annual balance, while the numbers for 2026 reflect the scenario until the most recent update. Environmental PM analyzes data According to the Environmental Military Police, three main factors explain the high incidence of crimes in the region: irregular urban expansion, illegal breeding of wild birds and fishing in violation of legislation. Also according to the institution, the illegal occupation of protected areas, especially hills and mangroves, explains a large part of the incidents against the flora.
