Portuguese Federation announces departure of Roberto Martínez

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed, this Wednesday morning, the end of the contract with Roberto Martínez, now former coach of the Portugal national team. The departure had already been confirmed by the Spanish coach himself.

In a statement released on its official platforms, the FPF informed that the contractual relationship with Martínez and his technical committee had officially ended.

“The Portuguese Football Federation informs that this Wednesday, the contractual relationship with the national coach, Roberto Martínez, and his technical team officially ended,” stated the entity.

The federation thanked the coach for the work carried out over the last three and a half years. During the period, Roberto Martínez led Portugal to win the 2025 Nations League.

“The Portuguese Football Federation would like to thank Roberto Martínez and his technical team for all their professionalism and dedication over the last three and a half years, a period marked by the victory of the Nations League in 2025, but also for the dedication, professionalism and commitment with which they embraced the project and for the way they have always respected the country and Portuguese football,” said the FPF.

The entity also reported that president Pedro Proença is already working on choosing the new coach of the Portuguese national team.

“The president of the Portuguese Football Federation is already working on hiring the future national coach, with the aim of continuing to promote the ambition and culture of victory that should always guide the national team in all competitions it competes in”, concluded the statement.

According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the coach was chosen to replace Roberto Martínez, who left the position after Spain was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
