SÃO PAULO, SP (UOL/FOLHAPRESS) - The Italian team's saga to find a coach seems close to an end. This Tuesday (28), the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Giovanni Malagò, stated that negotiations are underway with Roberto Mancini.

Malagò stated that Mancini "must be the new coach" and that all that remains is to sign the contract. The statement was made during a meeting, this Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Italian Football Federation.

"I'm talking to Roberto Mancini about him being the new coach: we're waiting for his signature," Malagò said.

If confirmed, it will be Mancini's second visit to Italy. He was in charge of the national team between 2018 and 2023, and won the Euro 2020. At the moment, the coach is free on the market, after a spell at Al-Saad.

The team faces a crisis in finding a coach. Italy heard a refusal from Pep Guardiola and saw an agreement with Andrea Pirlo fall apart after Malagò blocked negotiations.

Furthermore, directors Paolo Maldini and Leonardo resigned after the lack of agreement with Pirlo. According to the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, former defender Giorgio Chiellini is the favorite for the role of national team director.

Italy will play again in less than two months. On September 25th, the team debuts in the Nations League against Belgium, at home. On this FIFA Date, the Azzurri will still face France and Türkiye.
