World Cup clash between Spain and Belgium this Friday
The 2026 World Cup is approaching its final chapters, and the ball is already rolling in the quarter-final stage. This Friday (10), there will be just one match: the clash between Spain and Belgium, in Los Angeles, at...
Spain comes from qualifying against Portugal, a duel of great rivalry on the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish have improved throughout the competition. After a draw against Cape Verde, which frustrated their fans, the team led by Luis de la Fuente got going.
Convincing victories against Saudi Arabia, in the group stage, and Austria, in the round of 32, put Spain back among the favorites to reach the final. To advance, victory must depend on a good performance from Rodri, Oyarzabal and the young Lamine Yamal, treated as the newest jewel of Spanish football.
If Spain has been improving throughout the competition, Belgium has gone through a real journey of overcoming in this World Cup. After drawing with Egypt and Iran in the first two games, the Red Devils saw their classification almost certain to be threatened by poor performances.
The rout against weak New Zealand guaranteed qualification, but was not convincing. And the duel against Senegal, in the round of 32, was one of the most memorable so far. After conceding two goals from the African team, the Belgians managed one of the most unlikely comebacks in World Cup history.
They scored the first goal in the 41st minute of the second half. They needed one more goal in just a few minutes to take the game to extra time. They did it, with center forward Lukaku. They reached the turnaround, and the classification in stoppage time of the second half of extra time, through a penalty kick.
The following match, against the United States, in the round of 16, already showed a more consistent Belgium. They beat the home team 4-1, without any scares.
There are those who say that the interference of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in canceling the suspension of opposing striker Balogun, motivated the Belgians on the field even more. And Lukaku dancing in mockery of Trump after the fourth goal made this even more evident.
