A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Kumamoto region, in southern Japan, this Tuesday (28), causing fires, collapses and damage to infrastructure. Images recorded by local broadcasters show the extent of the destruction left by the earthquake.

One of the hardest hit places was Aeon Mall. After the earthquake, an explosion caused part of the shopping center to collapse, leaving people trapped in the rubble. Emergency teams were mobilized to rescue victims and check the condition of the structure.

Aerial records taken by a helicopter from public broadcaster NHK World Japan show burning buildings and partially destroyed buildings in different parts of the region. In the city of Yatsushiro, part of a bridge also collapsed into a river.

As of the last update, authorities had not yet determined the full extent of the damage and the total number of victims. NHK reported that more than 50 injured people had already received medical attention.

The earthquake also disrupted essential services. Thousands of homes were left without electricity, while train circulation was suspended for safety reasons.

The company responsible for supplying energy on the island of Kyushu reported that no irregularities were identified at the Sendai and Genkai nuclear plants.

Several aftershocks were recorded after the main tremor, raising fears of further collapses. A tsunami warning was issued for nearby areas, but was later withdrawn.

Japanese authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents of affected regions to remain alert, avoid damaged buildings and follow the recommendations of emergency services.
