The schedule will be debated at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Until then, the defense must organize the first demonstrations of the process, scheduled for September, while the North American government has informed that it intends to complete the delivery of most of the classified evidence in November.
According to the prosecution, the expectation is to complete the evidence sharing phase before the trial opens. The process, however, still depends on the analysis of confidential documents and the assessment of requests that must be presented by defense lawyers.
The calendar also predicts that Maduro's team will have until the beginning of 2027 to file new resources. Only after this stage will the Court define the final agenda of the case.
Maduro and Cilia Flores will appear in court again this Wednesday for another hearing to review the criminal case. They face charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation.
This will be the third hearing since the couple was detained, on January 3, during an operation carried out at the residence where they lived, in Caracas. The former president pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been imprisoned for more than six months in a federal penitentiary in Brooklyn.
According to a recent report by The New York Times, the United States Court may face questions about its competence to judge the case, based on legislation ratified by the country itself. The defense, led by lawyers Barry Pollack and Mark Donnelly, is considering asking for the case to be annulled alleging irregularities in the circumstances surrounding Maduro's capture in the Venezuelan capital.
In April, the United States government relaxed part of the sanctions imposed on Venezuela to allow the Venezuelan government to pay the fees of the legal team responsible for defending the former president and his wife.
