In a note sent by email, Regenera said that it "identified and controlled a specific occurrence arising from a landfill structure". She did not say what hypotheses were being considered for the leak.
The company stated in the note that the situation was "promptly controlled" and that the interventions carried out by it show "continuous and progressive improvement in the quality of the water body". It also did not say what the interventions were.
Comlurb (Companhia de Limpeza Urbana do Rio), linked to the city hall, stated that it requested clarification from the company.
The CTR receives solid waste from the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Waste collection from homes is carried out by Comlurb. Then, this waste is taken to transfer stations, where it is separated and then taken to the center in Seropédica, where it is treated by the private company.
Residents and local politicians last week denounced the leachate leak, which was confirmed by the state government's Inea (State Environmental Institute), after a technical inspection.
According to the institute, the spillage of leachate causes flow towards a green area, used as a containment belt, and a nearby water body.
"As emergency measures, the containment of the leak and the removal of the spilled leachate were determined. Among the actions adopted are also the opening of a pit to drain the effluent, the suction of the leachate by vacuum trucks, the removal of the contaminated surface layer of soil for proper disposal in the landfill itself and the emptying of the leachate lagoon that gave rise to the spill," Inea said in a note.
Inea said that it is investigating together with the company the causes of the accident and asked that the population of the region not use water from artesian wells or rivers. Water samples were collected for laboratory analysis. According to the institute, no fish deaths were found.
The Piranema and Piloto rivers flow through Seropédica, tributaries of the Guandu river, whose water supplies much of the metropolitan region of Rio.
