Before putting an item in the washing machine or adjusting the iron temperature, it is recommended to check the symbols printed on the label. These designs act as a conservation manual and help prevent the fabric from shrinking, fading, deforming or being damaged during cleaning.

The guidelines vary depending on the material and may indicate whether clothes should be washed by hand, whether they can be dried, what temperature they can tolerate when ironing and even which products should not be used.

One of the most common symbols is the container with water. When it appears alone, it indicates that the item can be washed normally, by hand or in the machine, respecting the temperature indicated on the label.

If there is a hand inside the container, washing must be done manually, preferably with cold water and neutral soap. The same design crossed out by an “X” informs that the piece cannot be washed with water and must receive a specific type of professional cleaning, usually dry.

Iron care also appears on the labels. An iron with three points allows the use of a high temperature, recommended for more resistant fabrics, such as cotton and linen.

When there is only one point, the part requires low heat. This indication usually appears on delicate clothes, which can burn, mark or lose their shape when exposed to higher temperatures.

The square with a circle inside shows that the clothes can be placed in the dryer. Other details in or around the symbol may establish temperature limits or prohibit certain drying cycles.

The triangles are related to the use of bleach. When the design appears with an “X”, no product of this type should be applied to the piece.

The triangle with two diagonal lines only authorizes non-chlorine bleach. In this case, it is necessary to check the composition of the product before use to avoid compromising the color or fibers of the fabric.

There are dozens of conservation symbols, with variations for washing, drying, spinning, professional cleaning and iron use. Checking the label before starting the process is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your clothes.

Cautions when using bleach

Bleach is often used in household washing, but its main function is to disinfect and remove stains. As it is a strong product, it requires attention to the quantity and type of fabric.

When washing manually, the guidance cited by the Ekonomista portal is to dilute 150 milliliters of bleach suitable for clothes in around ten liters of water. The pieces must remain soaked for approximately 30 minutes and then undergo a normal wash.

In the machine, the product must only be placed in the compartment recommended by the appliance manufacturer. Using the fabric softener space without checking the manual can compromise the cycle, stain fabrics and damage internal components.

It is also essential to confirm on the label whether the item allows contact with bleach. The product should never be mixed with vinegar, ammonia, alcohol or other cleaning products, as these combinations can release toxic gases.

Hot water can ruin clothes; see which items to wash with cold water

Experts warn that the use of hot water can compromise the durability of some parts. Before choosing the machine temperature, it is important to observe the type of fabric and follow the instructions on the label.
