Brazil ends the tragic cycle of this World Cup with 56% success

Under the command of four different coaches, Brazil has won 20 times and recorded 11 defeats and 11 draws in 42 matches since 2022, a 56.3% success rate.

It is the fourth time that Brazil has returned home in the round of 16 and therefore only finishes among the 16 best teams. The last defeat was in 1990, at the World Cup in Italy, against Argentina, which won 1-0, with a goal by Caniggia.

The cycle that began after Croatia's elimination in the Qatar Cup, in 2022, saw turbulence in command of the team and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation).

With Tite's departure confirmed at the beginning of 2023, the then coach of the under-20 team, Ramon Menezes, was announced as interim coach leading the team in friendlies against Morocco (2-1 defeat), Guinea (4-1 victory) and Senegal (4-2 defeat).

In July 2023, Fernando Diniz took charge with the expectation of preparing the ground for the arrival of the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, then expected for the 2024 Copa América. The current Corinthians coach trained the national team while remaining ahead of Fluminense.

With him, Brazil started the Qualifiers with two victories, over Bolivia and Peru. But then came a draw with Venezuela and consecutive defeats to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina – this one at Maracanã –, an unprecedented negative streak in the South American qualifiers.

Diniz's resignation came on January 5, 2024, amid chaos in the CBF presidency. In December, Ednaldo Rodrigues had been removed by the courts, which considered his election process illegal.

An injunction by Gilmar Mendes, minister of the Federal Supreme Court, ordered the president's return to command of the entity on January 4th.

Six days later, Dorival Júnior was announced. The start was also promising, with a 1-0 victory against England and a 3-3 draw with Spain in friendlies.

Without confirmation of Ancelotti's arrival, Dorival remained at the head of the team in the Copa América, in which Brazil ended up being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Uruguay (on penalties), and following the Qualifiers. There were victories over Ecuador, Chile, Peru and Colombia, draws with Venezuela and Uruguay and defeat against Paraguay.

A new setback for Argentina, the 4-1 defeat in Buenos Aires, was decisive for another dismissal, and Dorival left the team on March 28, 2025.

The CBF finally announced Ancelotti in May, a month before the new FIFA date. Just three days later, Ednaldo Rodrigues was again removed from the confederation, and at the end of the month Samir Xaud, the only candidate, was elected the entity's new top leader.

Carletto made his debut in charge of the national team in a goalless draw with Ecuador. In the second match, the 1-0 victory over Paraguay confirmed Brazil's qualification for the World Cup.

Since then, there have been three setbacks: against Bolivia, in the last round of the Qualifiers, against Japan (the first defeat for the Japanese in history) and against France, the last two in friendlies.

This Sunday, the fourth came, confirming the early elimination from the World Cup. In addition to the 1994 and 2002 titles, the team had reached at least the quarter-finals in all other editions since falling to Argentina in 1990.

They advanced further in 1998, when they were runner-up, and in 2014, when they came fourth after a 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-final and a 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands.

In this World Cup, the team performed below expectations in its debut against Morocco, in a 1-1 draw. It improved in the duel against Haiti, beaten 3-0, the same score as in the clash against Scotland in the last round of Group C, in which it demonstrated more control.

In the new phase, with 32 teams, came the tough duel against Japan, won with a goal in stoppage time by Gabriel Martinelli.

Considered one of the best club coaches in the world, Ancelotti should continue leading the Brazilian team during the next cycle – he has a contract signed with the CBF until 2030.
