SÃO PAULO, SP (UOL/FOLHAPRESS) - Wesley de Batista, a student from Bahia who became known after winning first place in Medicine at USP (University of São Paulo), is admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) after suffering complications during knee surgery.

Accident happened at the University Games. Wesley suffered an injury to his right femur in April, during the competition. After the accident, he left São Paulo and returned to Bahia, where he remains hospitalized, close to his family.

"I suffered a somewhat serious accident with my knee, and, at the moment, I am hospitalized in Salvador, waiting to undergo surgery and go through a long period of recovery, needing to take time away from several daily activities. It has been a time of pain, uncertainty and also a lot of reflection", said Wesley, in a video published in April.

Surgery was finally done this week. To UOL, the family told that the procedure -which would last three hours- lasted almost 10 hours.

"He underwent a delicate surgery on the 13th, because the accident compromised many knee structures, preventing him from walking. The surgery was scheduled to last a maximum of 3 hours, however, he went to the surgical suite at 7 am and only left at 5 pm due to some post-surgery complications", said the family in contact with UOL

The young man fell ill in the early hours of the morning, according to his family. "His health worsened in the early hours of the 15th, and had to be rushed to the ICU and placed on an oxygen tank," he said.

Family says the condition is stable. Wesley remains hospitalized in the ICU and has a stable clinical evolution, according to his family. The student was sedated and unconscious, but woke up in the last few hours. The family also thanked them for their prayers and messages of support.

UOL tried to contact the USP Faculty of Medicine. If there are manifestations, the text will be updated.

Student went viral after passing USP. Wesley Batista gained national attention at the beginning of the year when he won first place in Medicine at USP's Ribeirão Preto campus through Enem. Son of a bricklayer and a maid, he shared on social media the moment he discovered approval alongside his family.

Preparation lasted five years. A resident of the Águas Claras neighborhood, in Salvador, the student said that he tried to enroll in the course since 2021. To prepare, he used used textbooks, free materials available on the internet and content learned at public school.

Vaquinha was opened to help with the move to São Paulo. After approval, Wesley created a fundraising campaign to cover travel, moving and expenses for the first few months in the capital of São Paulo. The amount of R$238 thousand was raised.
