Send it to g1 Searches showed that Claude's conversations, in which a user had decided to "share" a link, were saved by search engines like Google, making them accessible to the general public. The ability to search chat logs was removed over the weekend, but many were saved and shared widely online. An Anthropic spokeswoman said Claude users retain control over whether and when to share conversations they have with the chatbot. She said the links to the conversations were "not predictable or discoverable unless people chose to share them themselves." "When someone shares a conversation, they are making that content publicly accessible and, like other public content on the web, it can be archived by third-party services," the spokeswoman added. Claude's share option tells the user that "anyone with the link" can view the content, but does not explicitly state that the link can end up in Google search results. Reddit users initially discovered the publicly available chats, which comprised more than 200 conversations with Claude across at least 25 search results pages — some dating back just a few weeks. In conversations, users asked the chatbot to respond to a wide range of topics. In an April thread, a user asked the chat to write a first-of-its-kind blog post about cloud security, including details of a corporate project. In another, from last month, a user asked Claude how to "become the Nine-Tailed Fox?", before clarifying that he wanted to literally transform from human to the creature. Claude first attempted to show the user an AI-generated image, claiming they had been given "fully functional fox powers!" Other conversations with Claude included users seeking help with their resumes, including names, contact information and work history. Some users even carried out what appeared to be confidential research for their work, such as in the health sector, including transcriptions of private conversations. When OpenAI faced an almost identical issue last year with making ChatGPT chat logs publicly available, the company ended up changing how those logs were accessed. Grok, the AI ??chatbot from X, a social platform owned by Elon Musk, also had hundreds of thousands of chat records made publicly available last year through online searches. A Google spokesperson clarified to the BBC that the company does not control "which pages are made public on the web", stating that this action comes from the sites themselves. "We give site owners clear controls over whether pages can be crawled or indexed, and we always respect those guidelines." Since indexing of chat logs is no longer occurring in search results, it is likely that Anthropic used available tools to quickly block chat log links in search results. Google's process for a website owner to block a link is simple, but must be initiated by the website owner themselves. Other search engines, such as Bing, Brave and DuckDuckGo, where Claude's chat logs also appeared, were contacted for comment, but had not commented at the time of publication of this report.
