Among all the Marvel hero films, "Spider-Man: A New Day" is just not better than "No Way Home" (2021) – but, for many comic book fans, it may even surpass it. The new film, which opens this Wednesday (29) in Brazilian cinemas, does not have the extravagance of the previous one. He gets it exactly right by going the opposite way and opting for an adventure that's a little more down to earth. This fourth solo adaptation made by the publisher's own studio paves the way for a more mature Spider-Man, a little more faithful to the comic books and even more emotional. But don't worry, he's still funny. I wouldn't be Spidey otherwise. In "A New Day", our Peter Parker immerses himself in work as the hero Friendly Neighborhood of New York to try to overcome his loneliness – after having used an enchantment to make the entire world forget about his existence in the previous film. As if having to face a new threat that can control random people wasn't enough, he also has to face strange changes in his body and powers. Nothing cosmic. Nothing that threatens this and other realities. But more than enough for a young man with no friends, no family and no love of his life. The script also elevates Zendaya's participation, whose MJ for the first time has some level of complexity beyond "hero's girlfriend." But it's the new cast that really stands out. Liza Colón-Zayas, from "The Bear", values ??a small role that, with luck, should appear again in the Spidey films. As the great mysterious character about whom any information should generate desperate cries of "SPOILER" from nerds out there, young Sadie Sink proves why she is the most promising name in the cast of "Stranger Things" – and a great addition to the Marvel Universe in general. A director in New York (?) The most difficult job in "A New Day" was that of director Destin Daniel Cretton, who inherited the role from Jon Watts, responsible for the previous trilogy. But the filmmaker wasn't hired for nothing. In the film, he shows the right hand for action that he had already displayed in "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings". Marvel has gradually evolved the exploration of Peter's arachnid powers, and Cretton makes the best of them so far by placing the viewer alongside the hero on most of his bouncing walks through New York's skyscrapers. At times, the work comes dangerously close to looking like a video game, but soon controls itself again. "A New Day" also recovers one of the most vital aspects of the protagonist's comics. For the first time in Marvel films, New York becomes almost a character in Spidey's pantheon. Incredible, considering it was all shot in Scotland, on the other side of the Atlantic. Aside from some exaggerations in the script, some parallel plots that could be left for another time, or the fact that no one cares about how the hell Peter pays the bills without a job, "A New Day" is another great step on the hero's journey in theaters. The genre is even going through a crisis – but this crisis, luckily, goes far away from Aranha.
