White clothes that remain stored for long periods can take on a yellowish appearance, even when they have not been used. The problem is usually related to the way it is stored, the presence of residue on the fabric and contact with certain surfaces and packaging.

According to the Southern Living website, oxidation is one of the main causes of color change. Over time, the fibers can react with substances present in drawers, wooden shelves, cardboard boxes and paper used to protect the pieces.

Some plastic containers and bags also release vapors that can change the tone of fabrics. Exposure to cigarette smoke, e-cigarette vapors and fat produced during food preparation can worsen the problem.

Stains may still originate from residue that was not completely removed before the clothing was stored. Sweat marks, creams, deodorants and antiperspirants are more common in the armpit area, where the products come into contact with the body's natural salts.

Wash items before storing them

The first precaution is to only store completely clean and dry clothes. Before putting them in the closet, check for stains and treat them accordingly.

Excessive use of soap should be avoided, as the product may remain attached to the fibers. The softener can also leave residues and is therefore not recommended for items that will be stored for a long time.

Hands must be clean and dry when handling. Creams, oils and lotions can cause marks that only become visible months later.

Protect clothing from contact with wood

The natural acids in wood can accelerate the deterioration of fibers and promote the appearance of stains. Drawers and shelves must be painted, varnished or properly sealed.

Another option is to cover these surfaces with cotton muslin or tissue paper suitable for conservation, preventing the white clothing from coming into direct contact with the wood.

Avoid cardboard boxes

Although practical, cardboard boxes are not recommended for storing clothes. The material is produced with wood pulp and contains acids that can contribute to yellowing.

Furthermore, this type of packaging does not offer adequate protection against moisture, dust and insects.

Plastic boxes and bags can be used for short periods, as long as they are made with appropriate material. Polypropylene containers are the best suited for this purpose.

For prolonged storage, the ideal is to use covers or bags made of 100% cotton and with closure. The fabric allows air circulation, protects against dust and is less attractive to insects.

How to whiten clothes that have turned yellow

Washable parts can be cleaned with a solution of warm water and oxygen-based bleach. Clothes must be soaked according to the manufacturer's instructions before being washed again.

Exposure to the sun can also help with whitening. In this case, the piece must remain moist while receiving sunlight.

Other alternatives include using sodium percarbonate, hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar. Before applying any product, it is important to check the label instructions and do a test on an inconspicuous area of ??the fabric.
