In an interview with Parade magazine, cardiologist Nadim Geloo revealed five behaviors that he decided to abandon to take better care of his own heart. According to the doctor, seemingly small actions can produce important effects when maintained for a long time.
"We all develop conscious and unconscious habits that help us get through the day. Most seem harmless, but some everyday behaviors can have greater consequences for our overall health," he explained.
The expert highlights that routine can contribute to the development of hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, especially when it combines a sedentary lifestyle, unbalanced diet, stress and little rest.
1. Sitting for many hours
Working in offices and prolonged use of computers mean that many people spend a large part of the day sitting. This behavior reduces energy expenditure and can impair circulation and metabolic control.
Geloo recommends getting up and walking for five to ten minutes every hour. Small breaks throughout the workday help break up prolonged periods of inactivity.
2. Treating sleep as something secondary
Sleeping well is essential for the body's recovery. During sleep, cells and tissues undergo repair processes, while the cardiovascular system reduces part of the overload accumulated throughout the day.
Chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to increased blood pressure and increase the risk of heart problems. Therefore, the cardiologist started to prioritize a regular rest routine.
3. Ignoring the effects of stress
Continuous stress keeps the body in a state of alert and can promote changes in blood pressure and heart rate.
In addition to the direct effects, prolonged tension often encourages harmful behaviors, such as smoking, drinking excessively, eating uncontrollably and abandoning physical activity.
4. Consuming sugary drinks
Soft drinks, processed juices and other drinks rich in sugar can be consumed quickly and in large quantities, without causing the same satiety as solid foods.
Excess sugar is associated with weight gain, inflammation and metabolic changes that increase the risk of hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
5. Frequently eating very salty foods
High sodium consumption favors fluid retention and can increase blood pressure. Over time, hypertension damages the walls of blood vessels and contributes to the formation of plaques that hinder circulation.
According to the doctor, eating salty foods occasionally is not the main problem. The risk is in transforming this consumption into a constant part of the eating routine.
The changes adopted by the cardiologist show that protecting the heart also involves simple decisions: moving throughout the day, sleeping better, controlling stress and reducing excess sugar and salt.
