The changes showed up on a routine mammogram. Initially, there was a possibility that the microcalcifications were benign, but the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.
“The worst thing is this: the non-diagnosis, the waiting, the expectation, the fear”, said Silvia in an interview with the newspaper O Globo.
The actress decided to speak publicly about the treatment after realizing that her story could help other women. The initiative gained strength after a conversation with Marina Vianna, a friend who faces the same diagnosis.
"She told me that I helped her a lot. It gave me the dimension of how I could be a beacon for someone. When I went to have the double mastectomy, I had no one to talk to", she said.
The treatment also affected his professional routine. Silvia participated in recordings of the series “Impuros” and “Betinho – No Fio da Navalha”, but had to interrupt other work to perform the surgeries.
She also reported having gone through a period of strong emotional exhaustion, defined as a “mental breakdown”. Today, he considers the experience a permanent part of his career.
"I am several things: woman, mother, actress, Brazilian, Fluminense, Aryan, Portela and I have a mastectomy. I understand that this will stay with me forever", she declared.
Daughter of Chico Buarque and Marieta Severo, Silvia also cited Angelina Jolie as a reference during the process. The American actress underwent a preventive mastectomy and helped Silvia deal with her fear of having her breasts removed.
"She became my muse. The fact that one of the most beautiful women in the world had a mastectomy gave a certain encouragement," he said.
When speaking to women facing breast cancer, Silvia reinforced the importance of seeking support during treatment.
"It passes. It's not a big deal. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable and curable cancers. It has a lifespan during and after. Don't forget to ask for help."
