Young woman gives birth while sleeping and baby is protected by blankets

Carolina Moreno recalled the experience in a video published on TikTok, revealing that she tested positive for group B Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria, which forced her to take antibiotics before giving birth. As she was already three centimeters dilated and her cervix was thin, the young woman received the medication almost immediately.

Hours later, nurses administered a substance used to stimulate labor. As she felt “very uncomfortable” and the baby was not in a good position, the young woman asked for an epidural, having asked for an extra dose three more times. Carolina ended up falling asleep, with her husband, sister and cousin by her side.

While he slept, the nurses checked the baby's heartbeat, which at one point they were unable to detect.

"The alarm went off on the monitor, which happens when you can't detect a heartbeat, so my nurse went in to find them. This had happened several times before; my baby was very active and liked to move around. Sometimes I would adjust myself and move the monitor by accident, so we weren't too worried when she first came in, and I was still pretty much asleep. But as the minutes went by, I started to get worried because obviously she wasn't finding it... that's when I really woke up”, he recalled, speaking to People.

The young woman explained that the longer it took the nurse to find the baby, the more panic set in.

"When I turned my back, her hands were still on my belly, and that's when she told me that my belly felt really strange. At that moment, I don't know why, I thought, 'My baby is dead,'" he said.

However, when he adjusted himself, he felt something between his legs. “I swear I thought it was my placenta or that my uterus had come out... I never thought it was my baby”, he said.

In fact, when the nurse lifted the blankets, the newborn “was face down, under all the blankets.”

"He's on his stomach. He's not crying. And I panic. You see a baby that's not crying and that has probably been there for several minutes under the blankets, under you. […] I was very scared. I thought he wasn't alive," he admitted.

The nurse quickly picked up the baby and, even after he started crying, Carolina was unable to “assimilate that he was okay”. She even said that the whole experience left her “very traumatized”.

"I was screaming. I screamed at my husband. He thought he had missed the birth. He just didn't realize that we had all missed the birth," she added.

Although it was “a huge shock to find him [under the blankets]”, the young woman indicated that her son “was sleeping, and he is a very calm baby; even today you just have to lay him down and he falls asleep, he is not one to cry”.

"We had no idea he was out yet, which is actually what made it so scary at first, as they couldn't find his heartbeat because he wasn't inside me anymore. We thought something horrible had happened. [...] Now that we know his personality, it makes perfect sense: he's the calmest baby ever," he assured.
