A 36-year-old woman was arrested and charged with murder and illegal possession of a firearm after killing a man who was hiding under her daughter's bed, in Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, in the United States.

The case happened in the early hours of last Thursday (16). Police were called to respond to a shooting incident and, upon arriving at the address, they found the victim lying in the garden of the residence, unconscious and with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

According to the arrest warrant obtained by People magazine, the suspect, identified as Kendra Scott, told investigators that she returned home and found a man hiding under her daughter's bed.

"I did what I had to do," he told police.

The victim, identified as Rodderius Morton, died at the scene.

A neighbor told police that he left the house after hearing a gunshot and saw the body near the porch. According to the report, Kendra was holding a gun and repeating: "I shot, I shot."

During the investigation, a teenager who lives at the residence revealed that she had invited Morton into the house at around 1:20 am. She stated that, shortly after, her mother arrived shouting: "Who's in my house?"

According to the statement, the woman had previously made threats if she found any boy inside the residence.

The teen reported that Kendra found Morton hiding under her bed. The man collected his belongings and left the house, at which point the shot was fired.

In a statement to People magazine, the accused's lawyer, Blake Ballin, stated that the episode began with "any parent's worst nightmare" and reported that the teenager involved is 13 years old.

According to the defender, one of the main questions of the process will be to determine whether someone would be able to act rationally in a situation like this.

Kendra Scott remains jailed without bail. The first hearing in the case is scheduled for July 24.
