Schon led West Germany in 25 matches during four FIFA World Cups: England (1966), Mexico (1970), Germany (1974) and Argentina (1978), becoming champion when they hosted the tournament.
The French qualification for the semi-final guaranteed the coach two more games in the tournament ahead of Les Bleus. Thus, Deschamps will reach his 25th World Cup game in the next phase. Even if he falls to Spain or Belgium and doesn't make it to the final, the Frenchman will still have the fight for 3rd place ahead of him, the 26th match.
In the group stage, Deschamps was absent from the 4-1 victory against Norway. He temporarily left the French delegation to attend his mother's wake and burial.
Midfielder for champion France in 1998, Didier Deschamps has been in charge of the national team since 2012 and coached the French at the World Cups in Brazil (2014), Russia (2018), Qatar (2022) and this year.
The Frenchman is on the select list of world champions, acting both as a player and as a coach, alongside the Brazilian Zagallo and the German Franz Beckenbauer.
He played five World Cup games in the Brazilian edition. On that occasion, the French fell in the quarter-finals against Germany 1-0. In Russia, France won their second championship, and Deschamps added seven more games.
The "Bleus" played seven more games in Qatar, reaching the final and losing on penalties to Argentina. Deschamps reached his fifth game in this edition and, with this Thursday's result, he should reach his seventh game at the end of the competition.
In 24 games in charge of France, Didier Deschamps recorded 19 wins, three draws and two defeats. He is the coach with the best performance at Les Bleus.
