SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Taylor Swift won the lawsuit filed by a poet who accused her of plagiarism. In the case, opened in Florida more than a year ago, poet Kimberly Marasco claimed that the lyrics of more than 12 of the singer's songs used excerpts from her poems.

Judge Aileen Cannon assessed that the poems highlighted by Marasco contain very simple ideas and themes, in addition to the use of metaphors considered basic. She concluded that all of these elements cannot be protected by copyright.

Furthermore, Cannon claimed that the books published by the author sold few units. She cited one of them, which sold 3,000 copies, and highlighted that none of them had received any type of publicity, making the likelihood of Swift or someone from the record company purchasing Marasco's work small. For the judge, this makes the accusations that Swift's lyrics were copied from excerpts of the poems far-fetched.

Marasco published, in 2020, a book called "Swift Reflections: Poetry Inspirations" (agile reflections: inspirations for poetry, in free translation), using the artist's surname as a pun on the word swift -which can be translated as agile, in English-, in which he addresses some of the supposed similarities between the lyrics and the poems.

In 2024, Marasco sued Taylor Swift Production, the artist's company, for alleged plagiarism in the lyrics of the songs "The Man", "Illicit Affairs" and "My Tears Ricochet". The case was dismissed in September 2025.

The result of the trial came out three days after Taylor Swift's wedding to Travis Kelce, which took place at Madison Square Garden, in New York, in front of more than a thousand people.
