State of SP confirms the 15th case of measles in 2026

Another 12 are from the municipality of São Paulo and two from São Bernardo do Campo, in ABC. Throughout last year, two cases were recorded in São Paulo, both in the capital.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. Transmission occurs through the air, especially in closed environments with large circulation of people. The main symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and red spots on the skin, which appear between 7 and 14 days after exposure.

The greatest risk of severity is in children under five years of age - especially babies up to one year old. Pneumonia is the most common cause of death in this population.

The Department of Health reinforces the recommendation to apply a zero dose of the triple viral vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) for babies aged 6 months to 11 months and 29 days living in the municipalities of São Paulo, Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo.

The zero dose does not replace the doses provided for in the National Vaccination Calendar. The child must follow the routine vaccination schedule, with the first dose of the triple viral vaccine at 12 months and the second, preferably with the tetraviral vaccine (which includes chickenpox), at 15 months.

VACCINATION

From August 3rd to September 1st, people aged between 6 months and 59 years will be able to be vaccinated against measles in the capital of São Paulo, in São Bernardo do Campo and in Guarulhos, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated before. It will not be necessary to prove a previous vaccination history.

The recommendation is that the population aged six months to 59 years receive the vaccine, even if the two-dose triple viral regimen is complete. The guidance also extends to people who work in the three cities.

The vaccination schedule recommended by the Ministry of Health provides for two doses: the first at 12 months, with the triple viral vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella), and the second at 15 months, with the tetraviral vaccine (which includes chickenpox).

People aged 1 to 29 should have two doses of the triple virus, while adults aged 30 to 59 should have at least one. Healthcare professionals need to prove two doses regardless of age.
