The aircraft were flying in a line of similar height and did not collide due to the action of TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System), a collision avoidance system. The case happened on July 10, according to the website The Aviation Herald, which published details of the incident.
According to the portal, TCAS resolution alerts were activated in both cockpits: the Iberia Airbus was instructed to descend 150 meters, while the Air Europa Boeing, to ascend approximately 120 meters. After warnings, both aircraft managed to land safely at their respective destination airports.
The Aviation Herald obtained a note from CIAIAC, a Spanish authority that carries out investigations into aviation accidents and incidents, released this Friday, 17th.
The agency explains that a TCAS TA (Traffic Advisory) alert was triggered for the Airbus, followed by a 'TCAS RA DESCEND' (Resolution Advisory) alert, because the Boeing was at the same flight level and was flying along the same airway in the opposite direction.
"On the other aircraft, a 'TCAS RA CLIMB' (recommended resolution to climb) alert was triggered", says the CIAIAC note cited by the website.
"The Airbus A321 descended 500 feet, following the system's instructions, until receiving the 'LEVEL OFF' instruction (level the flight). The Boeing 787-9 ascended 400 feet, also following the system instructions, until receiving the 'CLEAR OF CONFLICT' warning (conflict resolved)", he added.
