Netflix announced, in March this year, the purchase of InterPositive, an artificial intelligence startup founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. At the time, the value of the operation was not disclosed, but new documents presented to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission revealed more details of the deal.

According to records, Netflix disbursed around US$587 million (R$3 billion) in cash.

According to the website TechCrunch, the acquisition includes technologies developed by InterPositive, aimed at accelerating post-production processes, and the company's entire team. Ben Affleck will also join Netflix as a senior advisor.

Founded in 2022, InterPositive emerged after Affleck followed the initial advancement of artificial intelligence in film production and concluded that the available tools still did not adequately meet the needs of professionals in the sector.

The actor and director also stated that he felt a responsibility to his colleagues and the industry to preserve the power of human creativity.

“I wanted to develop a workflow capable of recording what happens on a set, using the same vocabulary as directors and cinematographers, as well as offering the consistency and controls expected by these professionals,” said Affleck.

Netflix admits the use of AI in 300 productions in 2026

Netflix revealed that it used artificial intelligence in around 300 productions this year, mainly in post-production work. The information was disclosed in a letter sent to investors after the presentation of the second quarter financial results.

The company said the use of generative artificial intelligence is growing rapidly among its creative partners and already spans different stages of production, from ideation and pre-visualization to post-production and content delivery.

"We are increasingly turning to these tools because they allow us to achieve higher quality results, in less time and at lower costs than traditional methods. In some cases, certain important scenes and sequences could not have been included without generative artificial intelligence", stated the platform.

Among the productions mentioned are the Brazilian “Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri”, the Indian “Glory” and the North American “The American Experiment”.

The projects used technology to produce more complex sequences, such as digitally enlarging crowds, recreating historical battles, and creating long shots designed to build visual universes.

On its website, Netflix states that these tools can represent valuable assistance, as long as they are used in a transparent and responsible manner.

“To support productions on a global scale and remain aligned with best practices, we expect all of our partners to inform Netflix of any planned use of generative artificial intelligence, especially as new tools with different capabilities and risks emerge,” the company added.

In the second quarter, Netflix recorded a net profit of US$3.4 billion (R$17.4 billion), below the US$5.3 billion (R$27.1 billion) recorded in the previous three months.

Revenue reached US$12.6 billion (R$64.4 billion), an increase of 13% compared to the same period of the previous year and a result close to market projections.

Commenting on the results, co-executive director Ted Sarandos stated that great works continue to depend on the talent of great creators and that artificial intelligence does not change this reality.

"What it does is offer better tools to turn ideas into reality. Films continue to be made by people. Artificial intelligence just helps to produce them better", he concluded.
