Representatives of companies, associations and entities from Brazil and the United States will participate, starting this Monday (7), in a public hearing in Washington to discuss the proposal to apply 25% tariffs on Brazilian products. The meeting, considered decisive by the production sector, begins at 11 am (Brasília time) and precedes the final decision of the American government, scheduled for July 15th.

The surcharges were recommended by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) following an investigation based on Section 301 of US trade law. Among the arguments presented by the body are alleged distortions related to Pix, preferential commercial agreements, ethanol, combating deforestation, corruption and protection of intellectual property.
The hearing will be held over two days and will feature 14 panels. Half of the presentations take place this Monday and the other half on Tuesday (8). Each participant will have five minutes to present technical arguments about the impacts that the measure may have on their production chain. After the presentations, USTR representatives will be able to ask questions to participants.
The process was opened last month. Interested parties needed to request participation by June 22nd and send written statements by July 1st, documents that will serve as the basis for this week's debates.
For the Brazilian private sector, the hearing represents the last opportunity to try to convince the United States government to review or relax tariffs before the final decision.
Among the participants are representatives of Brazilian agribusiness and American buyers, a segment considered one of the most affected by the new rates. Industry entities, such as the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), the Brazilian Association of the Machinery and Equipment Industry (Abimaq), the Iron Industry Union in the State of Minas Gerais (Sindifer) and Centrorochas, which represents the natural stone sector, must also present arguments.
The expectation is that this week's demonstrations will be taken into consideration by the American government before deciding on the adoption of tariffs.
