Meta Platforms announced this Monday (13) that it will increase investment in its mega data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, in the United States, to more than US$50 billion. The value practically doubles the initial estimate of US$27 billion, in yet another movement by large technology companies to expand the infrastructure dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI).

The company also increased its planned computing capacity to 5 gigawatts (GW), which will make the complex its largest data center and one of the largest investments in AI infrastructure in the world.

According to Meta, the expansion of the project will reinforce the company's ability to meet the growing demand for processing aimed at developing AI technologies. The complex began construction in December 2024.

The company also reported that it has allocated more than US$1.6 billion in contracts to Louisiana companies since construction began. With the expansion of the project, more than US$1 billion will be invested in infrastructure improvements in the region, including roads, water supply and sewage treatment systems.

When it comes into operation, the data center is expected to support more than a thousand jobs.

Meta highlighted that it will continue to bear the full costs of energy, water and other infrastructure used by the project. In March, the company reached an agreement with Entergy Louisiana to finance the project's energy infrastructure, including new natural gas-fired power plants, large-scale battery storage and improvements to the electrical grid.

In a statement, Meta's vice president of Data Centers, Rachel Peterson, stated that the project is generating “real economic impact” in the region, while expanding the infrastructure necessary to support the advancement of AI.
