A baby intoxicated by cocaine was forcibly removed from a hospital in Gandía, in the province of Valencia, Spain, by her own father. The child had been hospitalized since birth and was found hours later.

The case happened around 7:30 am on Thursday, at the Francesc de Borja Hospital. According to Spanish newspaper Las Provincias, the girl had tested positive for cocaine shortly after giving birth.

According to the investigation, the father, an Algerian national, hid the baby inside a sports bag and left the hospital.

After the complaint, police officers went to the health unit, identified the child's mother and took her to the police station.

Social Services had been following the family since the previous week and were evaluating the possibility of removing custody of the baby from her parents because of exposure to the drug.

During the night, a call to the emergency service indicated the father's possible whereabouts. He was located and arrested on suspicion of kidnapping.

The baby was found around 9:30 pm in the company of another family member. She was then taken to the hospital again to receive medical care.

The child's mother, father and older sister, aged 20, were detained by the National Police. The three are investigated for involvement in the kidnapping.

Baby had withdrawal syndromeAccording to Las Provincias, doctors identified symptoms in the newborn that were compatible with neonatal abstinence syndrome, caused by the sudden interruption of exposure to narcotic substances during pregnancy.

Signs include intense crying, tremors and muscle stiffness. The condition requires medical monitoring.

Also according to the Spanish press, the couple had already tried to remove the baby from the hospital without authorization because they disagreed with the measures adopted by Social Services.
