According to Devon and Cornwall police, officers were called to respond to an incident at the former parliamentarian's residence and found the victim with serious injuries. The case is treated as a homicide.
Authorities reported that, so far, there is no evidence of political motivation or terrorism. Forensic teams continue to carry out examinations at the property to clarify the circumstances of the death.
In a statement, investigator Matt Longman stated that the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
"Our investigation into the homicide is still in its early stages but is progressing quickly," he said.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood mourned Widdecombe's death and called the case "extremely distressing".
Ann Widdecombe has had a long career in British politics. She was an MP for the Conservative Party between 1987 and 2010 and held different ministerial positions during the government of former Prime Minister John Major.
After leaving Parliament, he began acting on television and later joined the Brexit Party, led by Nigel Farage. Between 2019 and 2020, she also served as a member of the European Parliament. Most recently, he served as immigration spokesperson for the Reform UK party.
Known for her conservative positions, Widdecombe defended issues such as restricting abortion and was marked by controversial statements about security in the prison system.
The death provoked expressions of grief among allies and former colleagues. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson said she was "a Brexit hero" and praised her ability to mobilize the Conservative electorate during speeches.
