Ex-partner reveals what Sam Neill's last weeks were like

The journalist from Australian broadcaster ABC lived in a relationship with the artist between 2018 and 2021, after the end of their long-term marriages. Even after their separation, the two remained friends and kept in touch until Neill's death.

Known for productions such as “Jurassic Park”, “Peaky Blinders” and “The Piano”, the actor was diagnosed with blood cancer and revealed, in 2023, that he was undergoing treatment. In April of this year, he stated that the disease was in remission and expressed enthusiasm to return to the cinema.

Sam Neill died this Monday, July 13th. According to Laura, although the treatment eliminated the cancer, the actor's body was very weakened.

"He's been quite ill the last few weeks, and everyone who was close and loved him was rooting for his recovery, but I think it was too much for him to recover once again," he told ABC Radio Sydney, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The journalist explained that Neill underwent several sessions of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

“Fortunately, the treatment managed to eliminate the blood cancer, but left his immune system severely compromised,” he said.

Laura Tingle also paid tribute to her ex-partner on social media. She published a video with photographs of the two and wrote: “Sweet dreams, dear Sam.”

Sam Neill's death at age 78

Sam Neill died aged 78, surrounded by family. In a statement, the family stated that the actor left “with the dignity that characterized his entire life”.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected, but we are grateful that Sam has remained cancer-free,” the family added.

The family also thanked the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital and asked for respect for privacy during their period of mourning.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Sam Neill has built an extensive career in film and television. Among his best-known works are the “Jurassic Park” franchise, the “Peaky Blinders” series and the film “The Piano”.
