SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Actress Camila Mendes revealed that she faced a difficult period during the recording of Riverdale, when she dealt with an eating disorder and panic attacks. The statement was made during...
According to the actress, part of the problem was the character's wardrobe, which was full of short, tight pieces. "If I felt bloated or didn't feel good about myself, having to wear those looks made me feel even worse and extremely insecure," she said.
Camila reported that, although she had been living with eating disorders since high school, the situation worsened during the first season of the series because of the pressure of recording and the pressure she placed on herself.
"Because of my perfectionism, I needed to always be on top of my game, looking my best and looking my best," she explained. "Sometimes I would have panic attacks about feeling so gross and needing to be in front of the camera and just not being able to accept how I was seeing myself."
The actress said the situation got worse when she didn't have the time or space to process her own emotions. According to her, her panic attacks arise precisely when she is unable to freely express what she is feeling.
"If I feel like crying and I know I can't, that's what triggers a panic attack," he commented. "But if I had that space, if someone said, 'You have an hour,' I would say, 'Great. I'll cry a little, get it all out, and in an hour I'll be ready.' I have no problem crying for a while. Sometimes you just need to release that energy."
The actress' Riverdale colleague, Lili Reinhart, also said that she heard negative comments about her appearance during filming. In an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, she said that a director asked her to "pull in her stomach a little" between takes.
Camila played Veronica Lodge in the CW series between 2017 and 2023 and, despite the difficulties, she highlighted that she has good memories of the time.
"Not every day was like that. I loved my experience on the series, I look back on that time with great affection. The problem was being young and not having control over my own routine and my own life. That was very difficult," he concluded.
