The presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and China, Xi Jinping, spoke on Sunday night (26) for more than an hour, in a telephone call. In addition to discussing the integration of national development projects, the leaders also spoke about the formalization of a free trade zone involving the two countries.

According to a note released by the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom), the presidents “agreed on the importance of accelerating negotiations for a Mercosur-China agreement, which includes the necessary flexibilities.”

The expansion of cooperation in strategic and high-technology areas, such as artificial intelligence, satellites, processing of critical minerals and fertilizer trade was highlighted in the purposes shared by the two presidents.

In addition to commenting on the positive balance of trade between the two countries, Lula and Xi Jinping positively evaluated the results of bilateral actions already underway, such as the visa exemption for short-term visits, in force in both countries since May this year, and the agendas of activities to expand mutual knowledge between Brazilians and Chinese, promoted by the celebrations of the Brazil-China Cultural Year 2026.

Global conflicts and their impacts on people's lives, global food and energy security were highlighted by the two leaders as main challenges on the global agenda.

“The presidents expressed deep concern about the continued humanitarian situation in Gaza,” according to the Secom statement.

Lula and Xi Jinping also agreed that restrictions on free navigation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb have harmful effects on the world economy.

The leaders highlighted the relevance of the Group of Friends of Peace - a diplomatic initiative led by the two countries at the UN, with the aim of seeking a peaceful solution to conflicts, through dialogue between countries in the Global South - for ending the War in Ukraine.

Despite criticizing the United Nations Security Council's inability to respond adequately to conflicts, the presidents reiterated their commitment to defending multilateralism and their intention to act in a coordinated manner in international forums.
