According to the MDB, the priority of the summits in the states will be to form local alliances to help elect governors, senators, federal and state deputies and emedebistas.
"National liberation ends up uniting and pacifying, leaving the party stronger so that in the states it has a very positive result", said the national president of the MDB, federal deputy Baleia Rossi (SP). He is a candidate for re-election in the House.
The decision for neutrality takes place in light of the fragmentation of support for the party already existing in the states. In the Northeast and North, part of the party must endorse the re-election of Lula (PT), while another must align with the PL pre-candidate for the position, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), mainly in the South and Central-West.
In a statement, the MDB said that it is necessary to "understand the reality and electoral history of each state" and that neutrality was adopted with the aim of "strengthening state bases to guarantee positive results throughout the country".
"The MDB is a party whose statute respects the strength of the state directories obtained in the last election, especially reflecting the result of the last election for the majority ticket. In short, whoever has more votes from the common voter has more internal strength", states the press release.
During the national convention, held online, MDB candidates in 24 states were also made official.
In Alagoas, the former Minister of Transport and Lula's ally, Renan Filho, will run for government. In São Paulo, Felício Ramuth will seek re-election as vice-president of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), one of the main heirs of Bolsonarism.
There are still cases of uncertainty. In the Federal District, where Ibaneis Rocha was elected to the Palácio do Buriti for two terms, the MDB was split from the majority ticket of governor Celina Leão (PP) and is divided on whether to support the current head of the local Executive or launch its own name.
In the last presidential election, the MDB launched former minister and former senator Simone Tebet, now in the PSB. She did not reach the second round, but was the third most voted, with around 5 million votes (4.16%), and decided to support President Lula in the direct clash with Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Tebet left the party and joined the PSB at the end of March to run for the Senate in São Paulo on the ticket headed by former Finance Minister Fernando Haddad (PT) for the São Paulo government, which will repeat the 2022 dispute with Tarcísio.
At the beginning of this year, Folha showed that Lula even looked for parties from the center and wanted the vice-president on his ticket to be from the MDB to isolate Flávio Bolsonaro, get more campaign time on TV and reinforce the broad front message propagated by him in the 2022 election. However, the PT pre-campaign decided to repeat the double with Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).
