Brazil was the fourth country that most increased the number of international tourists from 2019 to 2025, according to the Tourism Trends and Policies 2026 report, from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). During the period, the flow of foreign visitors grew 46%, going from 6.3 million to 9.3 million tourists.

The survey compares the performance of countries in 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic, to the results recorded in 2025, showing the pace of recovery and expansion of international tourism.

Brazil in the spotlight

With a 46% growth in the number of foreign visitors, Brazil was among the countries with the best performance in the period analyzed.

The result places the country ahead of important international tourist destinations, such as:

Japan: 34% growth;

Portugal: 20%;

Spain: 16%;

France: 12%.

In South America, Brazil also stood out. While the flow of tourists increased in the country, other nations recorded a decline in the period:

Argentina: -23%;

Peru: -22%.

First semester

According to the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), the performance follows the results recorded in 2026.

In the first six months of this year, Brazil received 5.2 million international tourists, the second highest volume for a first half of the historical series. Visitors left US$5.6 billion in the Brazilian economy, a value 12% higher than that recorded in the same period in 2025.

International promotion

According to Embratur, the growth also reflects the expansion of actions to promote Brazil abroad.

Among the initiatives are:

participation in international fairs;

carrying out press trips;

organization of familiarization trips for tourism operators and agents (famtours);

advertising campaigns in strategic markets.

Global recovery

The OECD report highlights that international tourism continues on a recovery path after the pandemic, driven by increased demand for travel, the resumption of connectivity between countries and the expansion of investments in the sector.

According to the organization, in addition to driving the economy, tourism continues to play an important role in generating jobs and regional development in the economies analyzed.
