The accident happened at km 161 of the road, towards the capital, at 5:09 am, according to Artesp. The bus hit the back of the truck, but the cause of the accident has not been disclosed at this time.
The bus driver died at the scene of the accident and the second death, of a passenger, was confirmed by the SPVias dealership at 7:30 am. The bus was carrying 34 people, but authorities did not say where it had come from or what its final destination was.
In addition to the two dead, at least five people were seriously injured and six were moderately injured, all of them occupants of the bus. The Fire Department took at least two of the serious victims by helicopter to hospitals in the region.
The shoulder and one of the lanes of the highway towards São Paulo remained blocked at 8:30 am. There is no forecast for the highway to be fully opened.
