Boy on bicycle is hit by car and is in serious condition in Pradópolis, SP Student Nathan Pereira Marques, 15, was returning home on his bicycle after an afternoon of fun last Monday (13) when he was run over by the driver of a car in Pradópolis (SP). "He went with his brother to fly a kite and he was already coming back. He flew his kite, played that late afternoon, and then he said he was hungry and wanted to stop by the bar, to get the money and go to the market to buy bread. And that was when he was coming back on his bike [the accident]", says saleswoman Cristiane Pereira, his aunt. According to the police report, Nathan was hit while passing through Rua Eliotério Pizarro, in the Jardim Paulista neighborhood. Nathan was rescued in a very serious condition and taken to the Emergency Unit of Hospital das Clínicas (HC-UE) in Ribeirão Preto (SP), where he remains hospitalized. Shortly afterwards, he presented himself at a Military Police base. The man was identified as Magno de Brito da Silva, aged 51. He was subjected to a breathalyzer test and was found to be drunk. According to police chief Claudio Messias Alves, Silva admitted that he had drunk alcohol before driving. “He confirms that he drank alcohol, informs that he was speeding above the permitted speed, that he disregarded the mandatory stop sign and ended up hitting the back of the bicycle.” Silva was arrested in the act, underwent a custody hearing and had preventive detention ordered by the Court. He must answer for the crimes of negligent bodily injury while driving a motor vehicle, drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident. The São Paulo Public Defender's Office accompanied the driver at the custody hearing and informed that it will only comment in the case records. "We never imagined going through this, this suffering that I, my sister, my family are going through. At 15 years old, he is a child", he says. The deputy believes the driver mixed up the pedals and accelerated the car before hitting Nathan. "Analyzing the images, we get the impression that the vehicle increases speed when it approaches the cyclist. I believe that he was scared by the boy's presence. Instead of stepping on the brake, he stepped on the accelerator. This is the impression it gives because the vehicle is coming at a certain speed and, when it approaches, it ends up accelerating so much that the collision is quite strong", says Alves.
