The story was recalled by Holland during his appearance on The Tonight Show, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Asked about rumors that he had sent a private message to the Manchester City star, the actor confirmed the episode and treated the situation with good humor.
“Yes,” he replied, laughing. "It was exactly that humbling experience that every actor needs to have. I thought, 'I'm going to text him and invite him to dinner'. And I got absolutely nothing. Not an 'I'm busy', not any response."
Known for closely following English football and supporting Tottenham Hotspur, Holland explained that he decided to get in touch with Haaland after meeting him during a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco.
According to the actor, the two were in areas close to the event, which made him believe it would be a good opportunity to perform.
"I decided to try. I sent a message. I never imagined that one day I would be telling this story on television, but here we are", he joked.
Jimmy Fallon then asked if he would still be willing to have dinner with the attacker if the opportunity arose.
Holland responded in a relaxed tone, making reference to England's 2-0 victory over Norway in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. "After the other day, I don't think he would accept it. But he's incredible. A legend," he commented.
The curious story gained new chapters recently, when Haaland himself explained why he left the invitation unanswered.
In an interview with the Norwegian program A Laget, the attacker revealed that he simply did not recognize the actor's name and preferred not to respond to a message sent by someone unknown.
"I don't watch a lot of movies, so I don't really know who a lot of people are," he explained.
The number 9 said he received an invitation to dinner on Instagram, but decided to ignore it because he believed it could be from any profile. "I received a message asking if we could go out for dinner. I had never seen that person before, so I didn't respond. I didn't want to talk to someone I didn't know," he said.
