Monitoring records 36 species of vertebrate animals in the Itatiaia National Park Fauna monitoring carried out in the Itatiaia National Park (RJ) between February and April 2026 recorded 36 species of vertebrate animals using camera traps installed in different areas of the conservation unit. According to the park organization, the action is part of a partnership between the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), Onçafari and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), started in 2024, with the aim of expanding knowledge about the park's biodiversity and subsidizing conservation actions. Also according to the organization, throughout the campaign, 3,423 photos and videos were obtained. Of this total, 1,454 images corresponded to animals, allowing the identification of 21 species of mammals and 15 species of birds. The survey also confirmed the presence of endangered wild species. Among them are the peccary, classified as vulnerable; the puma, considered near-threatened; the margay cat, listed as vulnerable; the small wild cat, classified as endangered; and the Moorish cat, also considered vulnerable, according to official conservation lists. Among the main records of the campaign are images of a female wild cat accompanied by a kitten on the Rui Braga Trail, in the upper part of the park; frequent records of puma in the upper and lower parts of the unit; images of baby peccaries; and videos of a baby black-eared opossum.
