Who was the driver The driver who died in the accident was identified as Daniel Carlos Santos de Oliveira, aged 24. He was driving a 2011 Fiat Punto with Sumaré (SP) license plates and was traveling alone when the vehicle hit the toll plaza beam. Daniel was rescued in serious condition and taken to the Municipal Hospital of Jaguariúna (SP), but he did not survive his injuries. According to the police report, his parents live in the state of Pernambuco, 2,000 kilometers away from the accident site. Therefore, an aunt from Jaguariúna was responsible for the procedures to release the body at the Legal Medical Institute (IML), this Monday (27). According to Funerária Bom Jesus de Jaguariúna, the wake was held from 6 am this Tuesday (28), at the Municipal Velório de Jaguariúna, and the burial at 10 am, at the Municipal Cemetery of Jaguariúna. ? At around 9:50 am on Sunday (26), the vehicle crossed the marked area, hit the concrete structure that divides the lanes and was thrown. The car reached a height of approximately six meters, collided with the upper support beam of the tollbooth roof and then overturned. The combination of high speed and the inclined and tapered shape of the retaining wall meant that the structure functioned as a ramp for the vehicle. The impact against the edge of the barrier transformed some of the energy of the crash into upward motion, launching the car into the air. Leandro Tessler, a professor at Unicamp, explained that, in situations like this, the trajectory after contact with the ramp depends mainly on speed. Therefore, a lighter or heavier vehicle would behave similarly if it hit the structure under the same conditions. 3. The impact on the toll plaza The force of the impact was such that the car "took flight" and hit the upper beam with enough energy to cause part of the toll plaza roof to collapse. The affected booth was intended for automatic payment and no employees were injured. The support beam and part of the roof fell onto cabins 16 and 18, in addition to hitting two cars waiting in line for payment. The seven people in the vehicles were not injured. According to Leandro Tessler, professor at the Department of Applied Physics at Unicamp, without the inclined tip, the car probably would not have been thrown against the roof. This does not mean, however, that the result would necessarily be less serious. 4. What the witnesses say According to the incident report, a toll plaza employee who gave a statement to the Civil Police reported that she saw the moment the vehicle was heading towards the booths and noticed that the driver avoided other cars and did not try to brake before crashing. In the next cabin, the impact scared those waiting to pass. Administrative assistant José Demétrio told EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, that he was traveling with his wife and son when he heard a bang that he likened to an explosion. The first reaction was to ask the family to get out of the car. "I was making payments, when I simply heard the noise, a huge explosion, a huge noise. And then the whole structure came down, on top of the car. I could only, at that moment, ask my family to get out of the inside. While everything was collapsing there," he said. Public employee José Sampaio was handing the payment card to the attendant when the roof collapsed. According to him, the car that caused the accident spilled oil and spread debris across the track. "Suddenly there was an intense noise from behind and I saw a roof collapsing on my car, the car covered in oil. Then we went to check later that there was a car that had flown over ours", he said. 5.
