"A family found him on the side of the road, all wet from the rain and brought him here. We placed him in the incubator, gave him first aid, contacted a park veterinarian and administered medication. The brocket deer is a solitary and territorial animal that measures just over one meter and weighs up to 25 kg. The species has visual differences between sexes and ages (males with horns, females with lighter fur and puppies painted white). Its main threats are deforestation, road kill and illegal hunting. Despite the good intention in the rescue, zootechnician Elias Alberto Gutierrez Carnelossi, professor at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), warns that puppies found alone are not always abandoned and should not be removed from the location. "As it is a puppy, it is very likely that the mother was nearby when it was found. People, with good intentions and thinking that the animal is an orphan, end up collecting it and taking it home", explained the specialist.
