Government estimates that 47.3% of Brazilian exports are affected by US tariffs

The federal government estimates that 47.3% of Brazilian exports are affected by tariffs imposed by the United States. The calculation considers the tariffs of 12.5%, announced this Thursday (23), the 25% tariffs announced last week and the surcharge applied to steel and aluminum, announced last year by the North American government. Considering only the new taxes, the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce (MDIC) estimates that the new US measures affect 23.1% of Brazilian exports and that 52.7% remain without additional sectoral or specific tariffs against Brazil.

4.7% of exports are achieved exclusively by the 12.5% surcharge, including, for example, works of stone, plaster and similar materials; ores; essential oils and perfumery products; and fish; 1.9% of exports is achieved exclusively by the 25% surcharge, covering, among other products, sugar; and 16.5% of exports are reached simultaneously by both measures and, therefore, are subject to the accumulated surcharge of 37.5%, in the case of products such as machinery and equipment; various types of wood; fats and oils; footwear; furniture; clothing. The United States announced on Thursday the application of a new tariff on imports from around 60 trading partners, including Brazil, for failing to prohibit and monitor the import of goods produced with forced labor. Last week, the North American government confirmed the application of an additional 25% tariff on Brazilian products, with an extensive list of exempt items.
