The United States government announced the extension for another year of the executive order signed against Brazil, which imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian products, based on the so-called International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In a statement published by the Federal Reserve (the American central bank) and addressed to the White House, the government alleges that the Brazilian government adopts practices and actions that "interfere in the United States economy, infringe on the free expression rights of US citizens, violate human rights and undermine the US interest in protecting its citizens and companies". Trump Government A survey carried out by the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara, indicates that Trump is the North American president who issued the most executive orders on average per year. During the first half of this second term, he has already signed 176 orders - which gives a weighted average per year of 342. Behind him is Franklin D. Roosevelt, who governed the country after the crisis of 1929 and during the Second World War, an extraordinary period, and had an average of 307 orders. In the first six months of his second term alone, Trump has signed more executive orders than Joe Biden did during his entire four years in power (162). What is an executive order? This measure works as a federal government instrument that does not require Congressional approval. According to the BBC, an executive order needs to work within the limits of the law, with each order being, in theory, reviewed by the Legal Advice Office for form and legality – however, this does not always happen. If an order is found to be outside the bounds of what is acceptable, it may be subject to legal review. Congress can also pass a law to override the executive order, but the president still has veto power over that law.
