Jânio Varjão is two-time champion of the 5,000 meters at the 2026 Brazil Athletics Trophy

Revealed and trained by coach Sivirino dos Santos, Jânio confirmed his favoritism by completing the race in 14min03s41, guaranteeing the gold medal. Second place went to Thiago do Rosário André, from Pinheiros, with 14min05s56, while André Carlos Sousa Sales, also from Pinheiros, completed the podium by clocking 14min06s97.

In addition to the champion, Mato Grosso was also represented by Vitor Ferreira dos Santos, also from Barra do Garças, who finished in 12th place, with a time of 14min43s90.

The title consolidates Jânio's evolution on the national scene. In 2025, he had already won gold in the 5,000 meters of the Brazil Trophy by winning with a time of 14min20s16, a result that marked the athlete's first gold medal in the competition after two consecutive editions ending with bronze.

The 2025 season was also marked by an important international result. In April of that year, Jânio won the silver medal at the South American Athletics Championship, held in Argentina. On that occasion, he set his personal record in the 5,000 meters by completing the race in 13:55.88.

With his second national championship, the athlete from Mato Grosso reinforces his name among the main distance runners in the country and emerges as one of the candidates to seek space in the Brazilian athletics team during the Olympic cycle towards the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
