The horses were in riding centers in the region. Initially, teams tried to transport them in trucks and trailers, but the speed at which the flames advanced made the operation risky for those responsible for the rescue.
Given the impossibility of safely removing the animals, they were released so they could escape on their own. In the video, the horses appear galloping while a large column of black smoke spreads in the background.
According to information released by the French press, most of the animals were later located and taken to shelters.
The fires affecting areas of France and Spain have already destroyed thousands of hectares and caused the evacuation of residents from different locations. In and around Biscarrosse, around 23,000 people would have been evacuated.
