The decision came after former minister Joaquim Barbosa withdrew from running for Palácio do Planalto. Furthermore, at the beginning of the year, the party even put forward the name of former minister Aldo Rebelo for president, but he ended up being discarded.
President of the DC directory in Mato Grosso, Clariana will be the second woman in the electoral race – the other is Samara Martins, from Unidad Popular (UP), a radical left party. The DC convention is scheduled for August 2nd.
“Clariana represents the opportunity for Brazil to have, in this election, a female voice in the race for the Presidency,” said João Caldas, president of the party, which has little structure and will not have the right to TV time.
The candidate promises to be “the voice of thousands of women”.
“It is impossible to imagine an election in Brazil in which 52% of the electorate are women and not have a female candidate,” he declared.
