Who is Karyna Shuliak, Epstein's ex who could inherit millions?

The files on Epstein began to be released by the United States Department of Justice at the end of last year and reveal details of the relationship maintained by the couple for around eight years.

Originally from Belarus, Karyna moved to New York in 2010 on a student visa to study English. At the time, he was working as a dental assistant and intended to complete the training in Dentistry that he had started in his country.

About nine months after arriving in the United States, when she was 21 years old, she met Epstein through a young woman who was forced to recruit women for the businessman.

According to The New York Times, Karyna, now 37 years old, never presented herself as a victim of Epstein nor was she considered an accomplice in the sex trafficking scheme run by him.

After meeting her, the financier began to help her financially and supported her candidacy for Columbia University's School of Dentistry. The first application for admission, however, was rejected.

Epstein then turned to his contacts and made a donation of approximately US$210,000, equivalent to around R$1.1 million.

Documents also indicate that two teachers had revealed in advance the subjects that would be covered in the practical entrance exam. After being accepted, Karyna had her course fees paid by the businessman.

Emails show, however, that she initially refused to receive the help. In one of the messages, he stated that he considered Epstein an “extraordinary person”, but said that he could not accept the support because of his principles.

In response, he criticized her for believing “rumors and stories.”

"Sometimes the world is very cruel and in most cases we have to pay a certain price for things. I have to say I have read a few things about you," Karyna wrote.

Relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

According to the “New York Times”, Karyna was considered Epstein’s “favorite”. The businessman said he loved her and transferred almost US$1 million to her over the years, an amount equivalent to approximately R$5.3 million.

The documents also expose aspects of the couple's intimacy. In different email exchanges, the two talked about their sex life, contraceptive methods and acne treatments.

Karyna also allegedly purchased products from a sexual wellness company aimed at couples. Other messages show that she sent Epstein links to pornographic videos and argued with him about the frequency of sexual relations.

Over the years, the dentist gained the financier's trust and began to help him manage properties and employees. She would also have played an important role in the attempt to purchase a palace in Morocco, just weeks before Epstein's arrest.

When Karyna's student visa expired, the businessman suggested that she marry a person of the same sex to make it easier to obtain a green card and, later, American citizenship.

Last person to speak to Epstein

In July 2019, Karyna and Epstein traveled to Paris. Days later, he returned to the United States and was arrested by federal authorities, while she remained in Europe.

About a month after his arrest, Epstein spoke with Karyna by phone for approximately 20 minutes. In the call, he allegedly stated that the sex trafficking allegations would take longer to resolve and advised his girlfriend to look for another place to live.

The following day, August 10, 2019, the businessman was found dead in his cell.

Shortly before his death, Epstein had changed his will and left a large part of his fortune to Karyna, as well as a diamond ring. The documents analyzed by the newspaper, however, do not clarify when she will be able to receive the goods.

Karyna Shuliak could inherit up to $100 million. Epstein's assets were valued at a higher value, but, after paying compensation to victims, the estate is estimated to be worth between US$120 million and US$200 million.

There are also other beneficiaries, including the children of Mark Epstein, the financier's brother.

According to files released by the United States Department of Justice, Karyna could receive up to US$100 million, an amount equivalent to approximately R$540 million, in addition to a 33-carat diamond ring.
