Zinédine Zidane was announced this Tuesday (28) as the new coach of the French national team. At 54 years old, the former player signed a contract until 2030 and will occupy the position left by Didier Deschamps after the 2026 World Cup.

The presentation was led by Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation. The director classified the change in command of the team as an exceptional moment, as France had not changed coaches for almost 14 years.

"This morning we are experiencing an exceptional moment. Almost 14 years ago, the Federation did not face a situation of this type. It is also a special moment for the person who is here by my side", said Diallo.

Zidane had been out of work since 2021, when he ended his second spell at Real Madrid. Since then, his name has been linked to European clubs and teams in Saudi Arabia, but he was waiting for the opportunity to manage the French national team.

World champion as a player in 1998, the former midfielder played more than 100 matches for France. As a coach, he only managed Real Madrid, a club with which he won three consecutive editions of the Champions League, in addition to two Spanish Championship titles.

Premiere scheduled for September

Zidane's debut is scheduled for September 25, against Turkey, in the group stage of the League of Nations. Three days later, the French team will face Belgium away from home.

The first match in front of the fans will be against Italy, on October 2, at the Stade de France. On October 5th, the team will return to the same stadium to host Belgium.

Didier Deschamps ended his time with the national team after the 6-4 defeat to England in the match for third place in the World Cup. The coach remained in office for 14 years and recorded 120 victories in 185 matches.

During this period, he led France to the 2018 world title and the 2021 Nations League. He also reached the finals of the 2016 Euro Cup, lost to Portugal in extra time, and the 2022 World Cup, won by Argentina on penalties.

Before his farewell, Deschamps stated that he would miss representing the country and recalled the 25 years dedicated to the national team, including his careers as a player and coach.
