Zendaya causes controversy when she wears earrings made from 3,000-year-old relics at an event
SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - The looks chosen by Zendaya, 29, to promote the film "The Odyssey", which opened in theaters this week, have been highly praised on social media. However, one in particular attracted...
This is because of a pair of earrings that she sported in a photo shoot on the 5th, in London. The pieces were made up of two gold medallions that are around 3,000 years old and were worn with a white dress from the Jacquemus brand.
According to CNN, the medallions were found in northwestern Iran in the late 1940s. They were taken from the Ziwiye archaeological site and are part of an art collection from the Median Empire, which dominated the region between the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
The use of earrings divided the internet. Some internet users criticized the actress and the choice of designer Law Roach, who designed the look, claiming that it was a representation of colonialism and that the medallions should be returned to Iran. Others felt that it was a way of preserving and using the artifacts.
The earring-shaped piece was assembled by British jeweler Glen Spiro, who used diamonds and 18-karat gold. The artisan has a collection that transforms relics into contemporary accessories.
It was purchased by jewelry company Barron London, which said in a statement that the assembly did not alter or damage the original objects. "At a time when Iran is often viewed through the lens of contemporary events, we hope these earrings can serve as a reminder of the country's enduring artistic, cultural and historical legacy," it read.
Zendaya, Roach and Spiro have not yet spoken publicly about the matter. In Christopher Nolan's film, the actress plays the goddess Athena. Also in the cast are names like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o and Cate Blanchett.
