A 41-year-old woman died after her intestine was perforated during a routine colonoscopy at a hospital in the east of São Paulo. Mariana dos Santos Cândido underwent emergency surgery, but ended up dying on Wednesday afternoon (30).

The incident occurred at the Municipal Hospital of Ermelino Matarazzo, where the woman had scheduled a routine examination. Mariana's aunt, Mara Aparecida, said that the family was informed that, during the procedure, the woman had practically half of the organ perforated.

"They said they tore 50% of her intestine. She was taken to surgery, they managed to close it, but she didn't survive. Today [Wednesday], at one o'clock in the afternoon, she died," said Mara.

The family member said that Mariana had no known health problems and was undergoing a colonoscopy for the first time, following medical recommendation.

"It was a routine exam. My father passed away from bowel cancer. So the whole family, after the age of 40, does this exam every two years. She had nothing. It was the first time she had it," he explained.

According to the aunt, the hospital explained that the colonoscopy was performed by a subcontracted service, but refused to give the name of the laboratory or doctor responsible.

"What they told my sister was that it wasn't the hospital's fault and that the test had been carried out by a third-party laboratory," he said.

The Civil Police registered the case as homicide due to negligence. The body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML), which will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Mariana lived with her mother and left three children: aged 20, 15 and nine. She had recently been promoted as a "school organization officer."
